Alberta to implement $14 solar panel recycling fee and landfill ban

The Alberta government will implement a $14 per-panel recycling fee and a ban on solar panel disposal in landfills starting October 1. Environment Minister Grant Hunter stated the measure aims to protect municipalities and taxpayers from future costs, noting that approximately 73,000 tons of solar material could reach the end of its life by 2045.

Industry advocates and renewable energy organizations have criticized the fee as punitive and lacking transparent accounting. Solar Alberta executive director Heather MacKenzie noted that the $14 fee is equivalent to a 10 per cent tax on a typical panel and warned it could lead to job losses for electricians and small installation companies. The Business Renewables Centre-Canada also condemned the cost, stating the fee is significantly higher than recycling costs in other jurisdictions.
