Alberta to pause fuel tax as diesel costs hit record highs

The Alberta government has announced it will pause the provincial tax on gasoline and diesel starting October 1. The tax reduction, which amounts to 13 cents per litre, is scheduled to remain in effect until the end of the year.

In Ontario, farmers are seeking government assistance as diesel costs reach record levels. According to Natural Resources Canada, the average national cost of diesel hit $2.75 per litre in mid-September, exceeding the previous record of $2.25 set in 2022. Farmers attribute the price surge to oil supply disruptions caused by conflict in Iran. In response, Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that the province’s risk management program for farmers will be increased from $150 million to $250 million next year.
