Alberta to regulate flag displays in schools

The Alberta government has announced a new regulation regarding the display of flags in schools, set to take effect on January 4, 2027. Under the new rules, school flags must not represent political, social, or ideological positions that conflict with a school board’s responsibilities under the Education Act.

School boards will be required to fly the Canadian and Alberta flags outside school buildings during the school year. Inside buildings, certain flags are permitted during official visits, celebrations, or ceremonial occasions, including First Nations, Metis Settlement General Council, Metis Settlement, and foreign national flags. Other permitted displays include civic and municipal flags, the Franco-Albertan flag, and the Royal Union Flag on specified days.

The regulation applies to physical and digital reproductions on school property, equipment, and social media accounts, but does not extend to flags displayed on individuals or their personal items. Public, separate, francophone, charter, and accredited independent school authorities are expected to comply.
