Alberta Transition Council releases sovereignty roadmap
The Alberta Transition Council has released a 214-page document titled ‘The Alberta Transition Plan,’ which outlines a proposed roadmap for the province to become a sovereign nation. The report, authored by lawyer Keith Wilson and retired executive Dennis Kalma, suggests ways to manage the transition from a Canadian province to an independent country, covering areas such as social programs, air traffic control, constitutional implementation, and relations with First Nations.
Keith Wilson, leader of the Let Alberta Decide group, stated the goal is to ensure a smooth exit by building upon existing infrastructure rather than starting from scratch. However, the plan has faced criticism. Some observers have characterized the document as propaganda designed to create a false sense of inevitability and ease regarding the secession process. Legal experts, including Errol Mendes of the University of Ottawa, have described the proposals as unrealistic, noting that the complex negotiations required would likely take many years to resolve.
