Alberta's potential secession poses $18 billion annual fiscal risk to Canada

Internal documents from the Canadian Department of Finance, released ahead of a provincial referendum on October 19, reveal the potential economic impact of Alberta leaving the federation. Analysis shows that between 2022 and 2024, Alberta provided a net fiscal contribution to the federal government of approximately $18 billion annually.

Alberta accounts for roughly 15 percent of Canada’s GDP, 31 percent of national exports—primarily energy resources—and 23 percent of business investment outside of residential construction. Despite representing less than 12 percent of the Canadian population, the province leads the country in federal revenue per capita, surpassing Ontario and British Columbia.

Beyond direct fiscal losses, federal analysts have raised concerns regarding the potential exodus of corporate headquarters, particularly in sectors outside of natural resources. The documents draw parallels to the historical departure of major corporations from Montreal during the late 1970s and 1980s.
