Sarnia reports fatal road crash, new oil pipeline plan and expanding cycling programs

A fatal collision on the Confederation Line in Sarnia late Monday night left one person dead and another seriously injured, prompting police to close the road segment between Modeland Road and Blackwell Sideroad for the remainder of Tuesday while the investigation continued. Drivers were advised to use alternate routes.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced the proposed Northern Shield Energy Corridor, a 3,300‑kilometre pipeline intended to carry up to 500,000 barrels of oilsands crude per day from Hardisty, Alberta, to Sarnia’s petrochemical hub. The plan, described as a "win‑win‑win" for both provinces and Canada, is still in a feasibility stage and would require further approvals and Indigenous consultations.

In parallel, Sarnia’s Bluewater Cycling Organization has doubled the size of its storage shed after rapid growth in its senior "cycling‑without‑age" program and youth bike initiatives. The expanded facility now supports nearly 1,000 rides annually for seniors and a growing number of youth participants, with the annual Bluewater International Granfondo expecting about 1,000 riders.
