Alberto Aquilani appointed Sassuolo head coach

Alberto Aquilani was introduced as the new head coach of Serie A club Sassuolo, succeeding Fabio Grosso. In a press conference with club president Carlo Rossi and sporting director Francesco Palmieri, Aquilani said he is “honoured and happy” to return to the club where he began his playing career.

He emphasized his goals: bringing enthusiasm, ambition and clear ideas to the squad, maintaining a cohesive group, and adapting tactics – he noted the team usually plays a four‑man defense but is open to a three‑back system. Aquilani highlighted the club’s recent promotion to Serie A, the quality of its sports facilities, and the importance of a shared market strategy with the management. He cited his recent successful season with Catanzaro in Serie B and expressed confidence in the club’s ability to attract and retain talent.

Aquilani also referenced his relationships with former colleagues such as Daniele De Rossi and Cesc Fàbregas, and praised former Sassuolo director Giovanni Carnevali. He described the appointment as a natural choice, noting he spoke with other clubs but felt closest to Sassuolo’s values. The club aims to consolidate its Serie A status while pursuing further growth.
