Alberto Carvalho resigns after FBI raid and undisclosed $107,000 side income

Alberto Carvalho, who had been superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, resigned on June 21 after the LAUSD board placed him on paid leave and threatened termination for cause. Federal agents conducted raids on his home, district office and a Miami residence linked to a tech‑vendor consultant in February.

Investigators allege Carvalho failed to disclose at least $107,000 received for executive‑coaching services he provided to Denver Public Schools superintendent Alex Marrero between November 2022 and January 2023. Payments of $2,000 to $3,000 a month were billed while Carvalho was still leading the $20.6 billion district, where he earned a $440,000 salary. The board also cited undisclosed travel passes and baseball tickets from a technology vendor. No criminal charges have been announced, but federal authorities continue to examine possible violations of disclosure laws.
