Alberto degli Abati honored in Trapani religious celebrations

On 6 August, the city of Trapani marked the feast of its patron saint, Alberto degli Abati, with a series of liturgical events. The ceremony began with a blessing of water and the distribution of cotton that had touched the silver reliquary of the saint’s head. Bishop Pietro Maria Fragnelli presided over the Eucharist in the cathedral, after which a solemn procession carried the statue‑reliquary of Saint Alberto through the historic streets to the Sanctuary of Maria SS. Annunziata.

Alberto degli Abati (1240‑1307), a Carmelite friar and former admiral of Frederick II’s fleet, is remembered for his preaching, care for the poor, and reputed miracles, including delivering grain to a starving Messina during the 1282 Sicilian Vespers. His life and legacy continue to inspire the faithful in Trapani and across Sicily.
