President Claudia Sheinbaum has introduced the "Lineamientos Generales para la Protección de los Derechos de las Audiencias," a set of regulations intended to protect the rights of media audiences. The draft, signed into decree by Sheinbaum, requires broadcasters to adopt a code of ethics, create a defender of audience rights and establish public complaint mechanisms. A public consultation on the proposal began on 27 July and will run until 21 August.

Opposition figures argue the measure would give the federal government the power to decide what information is true or false and to sanction media outlets. Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos warned that the government would become "judge and party," allowing it to fine or revoke licences of critical voices. PAN state leaders in Chihuahua described the initiative as an attempt to silence dissent, likening it to Venezuela's media laws. The ruling Morena party, however, says the proposal does not seek to silence media and defends it as a tool to ensure truthful, plural information.

The debate has drawn sharp criticism from journalists' unions and civil‑society groups, who fear the rules could become a mechanism for censorship, while the administration maintains that the regulations will not interfere with editorial content.
