Alberto Núñez Feijóo kickstarts campaign with Spain-wide tour
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain’s Partido Popular, has activated campaign mode ahead of an uncertain national election timeline that could be called within two months or as late as July 2027. Over the past two weeks he has traveled to Barcelona, Murcia, Santander, Castellón, Bilbao and Pamplona, meeting regional party leaders, entrepreneurs and families with seriously ill children.
During the visits he announced a fiscal plan featuring tax cuts and reduced bureaucracy, introduced the Ley CUME – a proposal to extend care benefits for minors with severe illnesses – and floated a law for unborn children similar to one promoted in Madrid. Feijóo also used social‑media videos to portray himself “walking the streets,” contrasting his activity with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s perceived absence. Former prime minister José María Aznar’s recent comment that the timing of the next election is less important than its outcome was highlighted by the PP as a justification for the early campaigning.
Feijóo’s outreach comes as the party adjusts to the summer lull and the opposition’s expectation that the government will not call elections immediately, prompting the PP to prepare for any scenario.
