Ceuta migratory crisis triggers economic losses and diplomatic shifts
The ongoing migratory crisis in Ceuta has resulted in significant economic and social consequences. The local government reports economic losses totaling 75 million euros, alongside a 90% decline in tourism since the influx of migrants began.
To mitigate these impacts, the Spanish government and the Ceuta Chamber of Commerce have activated 10 million euros in aid to support local businesses, SMEs, and the self-employed. This funding aims to modernize establishments and reactivate retail and hospitality sectors. An additional 4 million euros in funds for tourism and hospitality is expected to be managed through a separate agreement with the Secretariat of State for Tourism.
Diplomatically, Spain and Italy have agreed to lift reciprocal border controls on flights and ferries that were imposed in August. The decision, reached following discussions between Spanish and Italian officials, aims to restore normal transport links within the Schengen area while enhancing intelligence sharing.
Amidst these developments, tensions remain high. Amnesty International has accused military units in Ceuta of practicing torture against migrants, a claim that has drawn reactions from various political parties. Additionally, Moroccan officials have asserted sovereignty claims over the territories of Ceuta and Melilla.
