Alberto Stasi released from Italian prison on probation after 10 years

The Tribunal of Surveillance in Milan granted Alberto Stasi, 42, “affidamento in prova” – a probationary measure that allows him to leave Bollate prison and serve the remaining two years of his 16‑year sentence for the 2007 murder of Chiara Poggi in Garlasco. Stasi had already spent about ten and a half years in detention, including a period of semi‑liberty during which he worked as an accountant and began paying restitution to the victim’s family (approximately €300 per month).

Under the probation order Stasi must reside in a designated apartment in Lombardy, maintain employment or volunteer activity, observe a nightly curfew, and may not leave the region or contact persons deemed dangerous. He will be subject to periodic checks by social services and the courts, with the possibility of revocation if conditions are breached. The measure is unrelated to the newly reopened investigation into Andrea Sempio, who is now being examined by the Pavia prosecutor for the same homicide.

Stasi’s first day of freedom was spent with his mother, while the Poggi family has remained silent and the mayor of Garlasco has urged an end to media speculation.
