Alberts Šmits makes historic NHL debut with New York Rangers
Latvian defenseman Alberts Šmits made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers on Tuesday, becoming the first Latvian player to debut in the league at 18 years of age. Playing in a road game against the Boston Bruins, Šmits logged 16 minutes and 54 seconds of ice time as part of the third defensive pairing.
During his debut, Šmits recorded two hits and one blocked shot, though he finished with a -1 rating following a third-period surge by the Bruins. The Rangers lost the matchup 0-3, with Boston scoring all three goals in the final 75 seconds of the game.
Šmits, who was selected fifth overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, is the 31st Latvian to play in the NHL and the ninth Latvian defenseman to do so. He is one of only five defensemen in the Rangers' 100-season history to debut at age 18 or younger.
