Kosovo faces presidential election deadline amid EU integration talks

Kosovo is facing a critical political period as the Constitutional Court has set October 6 as the deadline for electing a new President. Failure to reach an agreement could trigger automatic dissolution of the Assembly and early elections within 45 days. Over 40 civil society organizations have urged political parties to find a compromise to avoid further institutional instability.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who emphasized that institutional stability is the foundation for Kosovo's reforms and EU integration. Kurti requested support for Kosovo to achieve candidate status, noting that the country meets necessary criteria and has shown steady progress in democracy, rule of law, and economic growth, which is currently around 4% annually.

Simultaneously, political tension remains high regarding the Specialized Chambers in The Hague. Kurti has criticized the recent verdict against former KLA leaders, claiming it contains factual and historical inaccuracies, and has stated that the government will process an opinion regarding the Chambers in Parliament this week. Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted government plans for rural development, including the construction of five new dams to boost agricultural productivity.
