Albrecht Dürer Airport night flight dispute resurfaces in Nuremberg
Controversy regarding night flights at Nuremberg's Albrecht Dürer Airport has resurfaced, leading to calls for demonstrations by the Fluglärm-Schutzgemeinschaft Nürnberg und Umgebung (FLSG).
Thomas Jung, the Mayor of Fürth, has voiced strong support for the opposition. Jung criticized the continuation of night flights, stating they are conducted primarily for economic reasons and noting that major German airports like Memmingen operate without them. He described the health impacts on residents as “verheerend” (devastating) and proposed a mandatory quiet period of at least three to six hours without flight activity.
Robert Mahler, chairman of the FLSG, reported that noise disturbances have intensified in recent years, particularly due to an increase in tourist flights. The initiative is specifically demanding the elimination of tourist night flights between 0:00 and 5:00. Residents have noted that rising temperatures during summer heatwaves force them to open windows for ventilation, rendering soundproofing ineffective against the nocturnal aircraft noise.
