Albufeira PSD proposes new tourism model after Oura accident

Following a violent incident in the Oura area of Albufeira where a drunk driver struck 16 people, the local PSD party is calling for a public reflection on the municipality’s tourism model. The accident, which occurred in the early hours of a Tuesday, left 16 individuals injured, including two in serious condition. The driver, a 35-year-old holidaymaker, was detained with a blood alcohol level of 1.29 grams per liter after fleeing police. He has since been placed in preventive detention by the Albufeira Court.

The PSD argues that Albufeira must transition from a model focused on tourist volume to one centered on quality, added value, and sustainability. They advocate for attracting more qualified tourists who respect the local community while preserving the identity and quality of life for residents. The party suggests a joint strategy involving the government, municipality, security forces, and local businesses to enhance safety and combat behaviors that damage the city’s reputation as a destination.
