Albury Local Court sentences two men for assault and theft

Two separate sentencing hearings took place at the Albury Local Court involving individuals from the New South Wales region.

Luke David Johnson, a 42-year-old truck driver from Albury, was sentenced following an incident in Corowa on June 10, 2026. Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault after behaving erratically while under the influence of cannabis and methadone. Witnesses reported that Johnson yelled at passers-by and chased a woman and a man before motorists intervened. Judge Sally McLaughlin described the assaults as “very significant.”

Neville Kennedy, 35, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for larceny and entering a vehicle without consent. Kennedy, who was on parole at the time of the offense, attempted to steal a utility vehicle in East Albury. His defense counsel argued that Kennedy was at risk of being institutionalized due to having spent most of his adult life in custody, but Judge Melissa Humphreys ruled that incarceration was necessary, noting that Kennedy was already “institutionalized.”
