Alcalá de Henares faces political deadlock amid recurring council ties

The municipal government of Alcalá de Henares is facing significant political deadlock due to recurring ties in council votes. The absence of Vox councilor Antonio Peñalver has repeatedly resulted in 13-13 splits between the governing coalition (PP and Vox) and the opposition (PSOE and Más Madrid).

Mayor Judith Piquet has had to utilize her tie-breaking vote to pass key measures, including the 2025 general accounts and a motion regarding municipal employment. In a recent extraordinary session, Piquet used her vote to reject a joint proposal from PSOE and Más Madrid aimed at accelerating public employment offers and preventing the loss of municipal positions.

Political tensions have also escalated regarding the management of municipal facilities. The People's Party (PP) has criticized Vox councilor Víctor Acosta, noting that while he opposes the current administration, he also serves as the president of the Municipal Sports City, the very body responsible for the facilities currently under debate regarding potential closures.
