Alcamo resident hospitalized with Legionella infection

A 55-year-old resident of Alcamo has tested positive for Legionella pneumophila and is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit at the Sant’Antonio Abate hospital in Trapani. The patient presented with general malaise and severe respiratory distress.

Following the diagnosis, the Department of Prevention of the Asp Trapani initiated investigations. Preliminary epidemiological findings suggest the potential source of infection is the patient's own home. Health authorities plan to conduct inspections of the domestic water systems and other possible exposure points to identify the cause of contamination. Legionella is typically transmitted through the inhalation of contaminated water aerosols, such as those produced by showers.
