Alcanar evidence destruction opposed by victims' groups

The Associació 17-A and legal representatives of victims have filed formal opposition to the destruction of evidence collected from the Alcanar explosion site, a key location linked to the 2017 Barcelona and Cambrils terrorist attacks.

Catalan police (Mossos d'Esquadra) requested authorization from the Audiencia Nacional to destroy the items, citing security concerns and a lack of secure storage space. While the Prosecutor's Office has not opposed this request, victims' advocates argue that preserving the material is essential. They contend that a parliamentary investigation commission is currently reviewing new data that was not available during the original judicial proceedings.

Legal representatives noted that new testimonies, including claims regarding potential intelligence links to the terrorist cell leader, could necessitate a reopening of the investigation. They argue that preserving all objects from the Alcanar site is necessary should a new judicial body or police team be required to clarify these emerging facts.
