Alcatraz gathering marks Indigenous Peoples Day amid tribal rights protests
Thousands of people gathered at Alcatraz to observe Indigenous Peoples Day, celebrating Native resilience and commemorating the 1969–1971 occupation of the island by the group Indians of All Tribes.
During the event, organizers expressed criticism of California Governor Gavin Newsom regarding his relationship with tribal communities. Specifically, advocates highlighted his recent veto of Assembly Bill 1881, a piece of legislation intended to strengthen protections for sacred sites and tribal religious practices.
The gathering, co-hosted by the International Indian Treaty Council, also highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Mukwema Ohlone tribe to achieve federal recognition.
