Alcatraz Island ferry dock closure disrupts tourism
Alcatraz Island is undergoing a temporary closure to accommodate essential repairs to its ferry dock. The closure began on October 26, 2026, and is expected to last until November 19, 2026, though weather conditions or unforeseen technical issues may delay the reopening.
Crews are working to replace deteriorating pilings that secure the floating dock system. This project is the third phase of dock repairs conducted this year, following an initial piling failure in January 2026. Alcatraz City Cruises, the ferry service operator, is funding the repairs to ensure vessels can dock safely. Once completed, the new piling system is expected to have a functional lifespan of 20 to 30 years.
The closure prevents regular public access to the island, affecting the nearly 1.5 million annual visitors. Alcatraz City Cruises has stated it is notifying booked passengers and offering options to either reschedule trips or receive refunds. As an alternative, the company is offering 90-minute Bay cruises around the island, though these do not include landings on the island itself.
