Alcácer do Sal mourns death of folk tradition keeper António Carqueijeiro
António José Serra Carqueijeiro, known locally as Tona, died on 3 August 2026 at the age of 79. He was a prominent figure in the Ribeira do Sado region, serving as the main voice and mentor of the Rancho Folclórico de Alcácer do Sal, where he had been involved since childhood.
The community of Alcácer do Sal expressed deep sorrow, describing him as a living encyclopedia of local folklore and a symbol of the town’s cultural identity. The folk group highlighted his passion for the “moda do Ladrão do Sado” and his role in preserving the traditions, stories, and music of the area. Municipal officials and residents offered condolences, noting that his passing leaves a significant cultural void.
The Rancho Folclórico pledged to keep his legacy alive, encouraging future generations to continue the traditions he championed.
