Alchemy's legacy in the development of modern chemistry

Alchemy served as a precursor to modern chemistry, blending philosophy, metallurgy, and medicine through centuries of experimentation. While practitioners failed to achieve primary goals such as the transmutation of base metals into gold or the creation of a philosopher's stone, their efforts established the foundational techniques and instruments used in contemporary laboratories.

Key historical developments include the refinement of processes like distillation, sublimation, and crystallization, as well as the design of apparatus such as the alembic. Notable figures in this transition include Hennig Brand, who isolated phosphorus in the 17th century, and Paracelsus, who advocated for direct experimentation in medicine. The shift toward a rigorous science was finalized by Antoine Lavoisier, who established the law of conservation of mass.

Despite a history marked by secrecy and hermetic language used to protect knowledge, the legacy of alchemy persists. For example, Nobel laureate Tu Youyou successfully isolated the antimalarial compound artemisinin by utilizing ancient alchemical manuals.
