Slovenian highways face peak traffic as summer holidays begin

The Slovenian road authority DARS warned of a sharp rise in traffic on the national motorway network ahead of the start of summer holidays and Statehood Day on 25 June 2026. The traffic calendar shows the busiest days will be Wednesday and Thursday, 24‑25 June, especially on routes toward tourist centres and border crossings with Croatia. A higher volume of freight traffic is also expected on Friday, and overall congestion is projected to remain elevated through August, particularly on Fridays, weekends and Mondays.

DARS highlighted specific periods of intensified cross‑border travel caused by school holidays across Europe: 3‑4 July, 10‑11 July, 17‑18 July, 29 July–1 August, 15‑17 August and 29‑31 August. The agency also noted that several road works are limiting capacity on key sections, including the coastal motorway between RavbarKando and Postojna, the Styrian motorway between Slovenjske Konjice and Dramljami, and the stretch between Domžale and Ljubljana. Other ongoing works affect the Šentilj‑Pesnica, Ivančna Gorica‑Bič and Naklo‑Vodice sections, with some closures until mid‑July and detours via Razdrto and Unec. "Gostejši promet pričakujemo že v sredo in četrtek," the agency stated.
