Alcohol consumption and its impact on physical recovery and sexual health
Research and health experts highlight how alcohol consumption can negatively affect physical recovery and sexual performance. In the context of fitness, sports dietitian Tara Collingwood warns that alcohol can hinder muscle growth if it replaces essential post-workout nutrition, such as proteins and carbohydrates. Furthermore, a review of 27 studies published in 2025 indicates that alcohol disrupts the REM phase of sleep, which is critical for recovery, even in smaller doses.
Regarding sexual health, the Irish Health Service (HSE) notes that alcohol can complicate sexual responses. While some may perceive a delay in climax as improved endurance, alcohol can actually make it more difficult to achieve or maintain an orgasm and can impair erectile function. Relying on alcohol to manage sexual performance may mask underlying issues rather than providing a reliable solution.
