Alcohol consumption guidelines for pregnancy and breastfeeding
Health guidelines emphasize the importance of managing alcohol consumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding to protect infant development. Regarding breastfeeding, experts suggest waiting approximately 2 to 3 hours per standard drink (roughly 10 grams of pure alcohol) before nursing. Factors such as maternal weight, food intake, and metabolism influence elimination rates. For significant consumption involving four or more drinks, a minimum wait of 12 hours is recommended.
In the context of pregnancy, health authorities advise total abstinence because no safe threshold for alcohol consumption has been established. Prenatal exposure can lead to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), which may cause growth delays, brain development anomalies, and cognitive or behavioral issues. Data from hospital stays in France between 2006 and 2013 identified 3,207 newborns with consequences attributed to prenatal alcohol exposure, including 452 diagnosed cases of FAS.
