Alcohol consumption linked to brain development risks and organ damage

Health officials warn that alcohol use can impair brain development in adolescents, whose brains continue maturing until about age 25. Psychiatrist Miguel Hinojosa of the Ministry of Health highlighted warning signs such as chronic fatigue, red eyes, unexplained vomiting, declining academic performance, social withdrawal and irritability. He advises parents to monitor behavioral changes and avoid allowing supervised drinking at home. Treatment options include community mental‑health centers and, in severe cases, hospitalization for withdrawal syndrome.

In adults, alcohol affects multiple organs. It quickly raises dopamine levels in the brain, creating a feeling of euphoria and contributing to its addictive potential. Direct contact with alcohol damages the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines, causing inflammation, acid reflux and, over time, serious gastrointestinal injury. The liver is especially vulnerable, with alcohol‑related liver disease being a leading cause of death. Recent research also questions earlier claims of cardiovascular benefits, indicating possible heart damage from chronic consumption.
