Alcohol consumption patterns show age-based differences in Mexico and Spain

Health specialists and recent data highlight varying trends in alcohol consumption across different age groups and regions. In Mexico, experts at the 17th National Week of Alcoholics in Institutions and Treatment environments warned that alcohol consumption is beginning as early as ages 12 to 15. Gabriela Ramos Márquez from the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez noted that early use can impair brain development and increase addiction risks. Medical professionals from IMSS emphasized that chronic consumption leads to liver, cardiovascular, and neurological diseases, calling for family involvement and preventive psychological care.

In Spain, the 2025 Health Survey by the National Statistics Institute and the Ministry of Health reveals a generational shift. While alcohol remains prevalent, younger populations show less frequent consumption compared to older adults. Data indicates that 35.1% of Spaniards aged 15 and older consume alcohol at least once a week, with 8.9% drinking daily. The survey suggests that while youth consumption is often concentrated in specific moments, older demographics exhibit more regular, habitual drinking patterns.
