Alcohol consumption rises among women in Brazil
Alcohol consumption among women in Brazil has seen a significant increase, with studies showing rates rising from 7.7% in 2006 to 15.9% in 2024. While men still lead in total consumption, specialists warn that the physiological effects of alcohol can be particularly dangerous for women.
In response to this trend, the Colcha de Retalhos initiative by Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) has reported high demand for support. During the first half of 2026, their help channels recorded 4,862 contacts from women across Brazil, averaging approximately one request per hour. The organization currently facilitates 80 weekly meetings, including specialized sessions for specific groups such as bariatric patients, Black women, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
Medical experts also highlight the specific health risks for women, noting that alcohol can disrupt hormones, exacerbate menopause symptoms, impair sleep, and increase the risk of certain diseases. Health professionals emphasize the importance of conscious choices and balance to mitigate these impacts on female well-being.
