Alcohol dependence: recognizing symptoms and risks
Alcohol dependence is characterized by an inability to control consumption, where the urge to drink overrides other behaviors and needs. Key warning signs include drinking early in the morning, using alcohol to self-medicate or calm down, and experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not consuming.
Physical symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include hand, head, or tongue tremors, profuse sweating, nausea, headaches, palpitations, and potential hypertension or dehydration. Psychologically, individuals may experience intense anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbances, and agitation.
In Wallonia, alcohol consumption levels are notably high, ranking as the fifth highest in Europe, surpassed only by former Eastern Bloc countries. Health guidelines suggest a maximum of 10 alcoholic drinks per week, with no more than two per day and several days of abstinence per week to mitigate risks.
