Alcohol metabolism and detection times for drivers
The time required for alcohol to leave the human body varies significantly based on individual factors such as age, liver health, genetics, food consumption, and the quantity of alcohol ingested. While general estimates exist, medical experts warn there is no universal rule for when a person is safe to drive.
On average, the liver processes approximately one standard drink per hour. Rough estimates suggest it may take one hour to metabolize a small glass of spirits, two hours for a pint of beer, and three hours for a large glass of wine. However, these figures are not guarantees of complete elimination.
Detection methods vary in duration: standard urine tests can detect alcohol for up to 12 hours, while sensitive EtG tests can identify traces for up to 72 hours. Hair tests may detect consumption for up to 90 days. In terms of breathalyzer results, reaching a 0.00 mg/l concentration can take anywhere from two to 24 hours depending on the individual and the amount consumed.
