Alcoi returns remains of teacher Germán Sanz Esteve to family

The Alcoi City Council will hold an institutional ceremony on Saturday, October 17, to return the remains of Germán Sanz Esteve to his family. Sanz Esteve was a local teacher, a member of the PSOE, and an affiliate of the UGT labor union.

Sanz Esteve was executed by Francoist forces in Paterna on April 6, 1940, at the age of 41. Following decades of uncertainty, exhumation and identification efforts have allowed his remains to be recovered from a mass grave.

During the event, Mayor Toni Francés will symbolically hand over the remains to a family representative. The remains will then be interred in the family niche at the Sant Antoni Abat municipal cemetery. The ceremony is expected to be attended by 21 family members, including his grandchildren, as well as union and democratic memory association representatives.
