Alcoi's Fira Modernista to revive historic sarsuela ‘Los viejos compadres’

The IX Fira Modernista in Alcoi will take place from September 21 to 27, transforming the city center into a historical stage to celebrate the social and industrial era of the early 20th century.

A central highlight of this year's programming is the recovery and performance of the sarsuela ‘Los viejos compadres’. This comedic work, composed by local musician Gonzalo Barrachina and written by Gonzalo Cantó, was originally premiered in Madrid in 1912 but has only been performed once since. The production will be staged by the Agrupació Lírica El Trabajo at the Parc de la Glorieta on Saturday, September 26, at 18:00, offering free access to the public.

Other scheduled activities include workshops on Modernism, the sale of period clothing, stained glass and wig-making workshops, and various musical and family performances. The festival aims to bring local history to life through participatory activities involving various cultural associations and citizen collectives.
