Alcoy mayor Toni Francés steps aside, Lorena Zamorano named PSOE candidate for 2027
Long‑time mayor Toni Francés, who has led Alcoy for 15 years, announced he will not be the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) candidate in the 2027 municipal elections. He said the decision was intended to prevent right‑wing parties from governing the city and pledged support to the successor.
The PSOE will put deputy mayor Lorena Zamorano, a close ally of party leader Diana Morant, at the top of the electoral list. Zamorano is linked to a different internal faction of the Valencian socialists, headed by former provincial secretary Alejandro Soler. The shift reflects internal party dynamics as the PSOE seeks to retain its stronghold in Alcoy, a key PSOE bastion in the province of Alicante.
