Alderney's Heritage London Underground Trains Run Along Coastal Tracks

Two 1959‑era London Underground carriages, painted crimson and cream for the network’s centenary, have been repurposed on the island of Alderney in the Channel Islands. The historic trains travel on rails originally laid to move stone for Alderney’s 19th‑century breakwater, and they continued regular service on the island’s Northern Line until 1999.

Today the vintage trains carry tourists along a scenic route past the harbour, Victorian forts and an old quarry, ending at Mannez Lighthouse. The attraction offers a unique glimpse of British railway heritage in a remote setting, where a population of about 2,000 lives amid Roman walls, Napoleonic signal towers and German bunkers, all under the distinctive blue British post boxes of the islands.
