Aldi expands UK footprint with new Cardigan store and £300m upgrade plan

Aldi is advancing its retail footprint in the United Kingdom through both new construction and significant store upgrades. In Cardigan, construction is underway for a new £6 million supermarket on Bath House Road. This new facility will be more than 50 per cent larger than the current Aberystwyth Road location, which is limited by space and parking capacity. The project is expected to create 10 additional jobs beyond the 39 roles currently held at the existing site, with a target opening around Christmas.

On a broader scale, Aldi has announced a £300 million investment to upgrade 25 existing UK stores. These refurbishments, which include locations in London, Liverpool, Aberdeen, Sunderland, and Bedford, will focus on improving the in-store experience through enhanced bakery, health, and beauty sections. The investment also prioritizes sustainability, introducing energy-efficient technology and natural refrigerants to reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, five stores in Stirling, Paisley, Wollaston, Linlithgow, and Lewes are slated for extensions. The company has also earmarked £370 million to open approximately 40 new stores across the UK by 2026.
