Aldi and Lidl slash sausage and ham prices in Germany
Major German discounters Aldi, Lidl, and Norma have implemented significant price reductions on various meat products. Starting October 7, Aldi reduced prices for over 20 types of sausages and ham, with savings of up to 50 cents per item. Lidl responded by lowering prices for its Dulano brand by 13%, with app users receiving a 23% discount. Norma also joined the trend, notably reducing the price of its MY SMILE liverwurst by approximately 17%.
These price cuts have drawn sharp criticism from the Westphalian-Lippish Agricultural Association (WLV). WLV President Hubertus Beringmeier expressed concern that the increased price pressure threatens the existence of pig farmers. He noted that the number of pig farming businesses in Germany has already declined by over 40% in the last decade, and similar trends are seen in cattle farming. The association argues that these competitive measures by discounters exacerbate an already difficult economic situation for livestock producers.
