Aldi implements cashierless shopping in UK and Netherlands

Aldi is implementing a new cashierless shopping system in its stores located in Greenwich, United Kingdom, and Utrecht, Netherlands. To facilitate this process, customers pay a 12-euro deposit via QR code or bank card upon entering the supermarket. This deposit is not an extra fee but is deducted from the final purchase total; if no items are bought, the amount is refunded after a few days.

Inside the stores, smart cameras track the items selected by customers, and the total amount is automatically debited when they exit. While the system aims to save time by eliminating checkout queues, it has raised concerns regarding data security and consumer privacy due to the continuous monitoring of customer movements and actions.
