Aldi private labels lead in German consumer trust study

Aldi's strategy of prioritizing private labels has led to significant consumer trust and market success in Germany. Approximately 90 percent of Aldi's total assortment consists of its own brands, a figure significantly higher than the 20 to 40 percent average found in traditional supermarkets.

A study conducted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Verbraucherstudien, which surveyed over 3,200 customers regarding 222 different private labels, highlights Aldi's dominance. The retailer won ten out of 26 categories based on criteria such as quality, price-performance ratio, and consumer trust.

Notably, Aldi's organic brand, Gut Bio, emerged as a leader, winning five different categories. This success reinforces the discount model established by the Albrecht brothers in the 1960s, focusing on high-quality proprietary brands over expensive name-brand goods.
