The High Court in Novi Pazar has sentenced Aldina Lakota to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of her mother-in-law in the village of Dubnica, near Sjenica. This marks the second first-instance verdict for Lakota in this case.

The crime, which occurred on May 28, 2024, involved Lakota inflicting 121 stab wounds on the 66-year-old victim, with 50 of those wounds located in the head and neck area. Lakota was convicted of aggravated murder committed in a cruel and insidious manner.

A previous life sentence was overturned in March by the Appeals Court in Kragujevac due to procedural errors and incomplete factual findings, leading to this retrial. Lakota is the first woman in Serbia to receive a life sentence in a first-instance verdict since the penalty was reintroduced in 2019, and she is the 17th person in the country to receive such a sentence.
