Aldo Bravo withdraws bill penalizing apology of crime

Aldo Bravo, a deputy for the Renovación Popular party, announced on August 23 that he will withdraw a legislative project aimed at criminalizing the ‘apology of crime’ during periods of political crisis and social conflict.

The proposed bill (N.° 00043/2026-2031-CD) sought to establish prison sentences of four to five years for individuals with public influence who promoted, justified, or encouraged the use of explosives, incendiary devices, or dangerous substances. The initiative faced criticism from the Consejo de la Prensa Peruana, which warned that the terms could infringe upon freedom of expression, press, and information.

Bravo stated that his decision to withdraw the proposal is intended to avoid distracting from the country’s priority legislative agenda, specifically focusing on citizen security and mitigating the effects of the El Niño phenomenon. He noted that this move follows comments by Rafael López Aliaga regarding more urgent national matters. While withdrawing the bill for now, Bravo indicated he may refine the proposal and reintroduce it in the future.
