Alejandro Betancourt investigation in Spain stalls due to U.S. silence

The Spanish National Court is facing a potential deadlock in its investigation into Alejandro Betancourt regarding alleged money laundering and tax evasion. The case, which examines the origin and destination of over $4 billion purportedly diverted from the Venezuelan state oil company, PDVSA, has been stalled for months due to a lack of cooperation from United States authorities.

Judge Santiago Pedraz has indicated that the case may be archived if the U.S. does not respond to a request for judicial cooperation by December. The Spanish investigation seeks to interview key witnesses who have already been convicted in the United States; their testimony is considered vital to proving the illicit origin of the funds entering Spanish territory.

Betancourt, a Venezuelan businessman with significant influence in the energy sector and known for investments in Spanish companies such as the eyewear brand Hawkers, remains a central figure. Without the requested financial data and testimonies from Washington, Spanish prosecutors face difficulties in establishing the predicate offense required to proceed with the money laundering charges.
