Alejandro Betancourt returns to Venezuela as strategic intermediary

Venezuelan billionaire Alejandro Betancourt has returned to Caracas via private flights from Florida, marking a significant presence in the country following a period of residence in the United Kingdom. Betancourt, who rose to prominence through Derwick Associates during the Hugo Chávez administration, is reportedly serving as a strategic advisor to Delcy Rodríguez. His advisory roles focus on the reactivation of the oil sector, mining, and the restructuring of sovereign debt.

Beyond his technical advisory role, Betancourt is described as an informal intermediary between the Venezuelan government and the United States administration under Donald Trump. Former U.S. special envoy Mauricio Claver-Carone has acknowledged that Washington has utilized Betancourt as a communication channel due to his expertise in the energy business.

These developments occur despite ongoing legal challenges in Europe. In Spain, the Audiencia Nacional has reopened a case against him for money laundering and tax fraud, involving allegations of $42 million in bribes paid to PDVSA officials to facilitate the embezzlement of approximately $4.85 billion. While Switzerland recently lifted an extradition order and passport seizure against him, his strategic utility in international energy politics remains a central factor in his recent movements.
