Alejandro Betancourt secures major Venezuelan oil deal
Alejandro Betancourt López, a Venezuelan entrepreneur, has emerged as a central figure in a major oil agreement involving the Trump administration. His company, North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP), has assumed operational control over 17 Venezuelan oil fields containing an estimated 65 billion barrels of reserves.
Betancourt’s rapid rise follows significant legal challenges. Until recently, he faced money laundering investigations in Spain and Switzerland. Reports indicate that the U.S. government intervened in these legal matters; following contact from Trump administration officials with Swiss prosecutors, Switzerland withdrew its extradition request against him in May.
Diplomatic sources suggest Betancourt has served as an intermediary between the United States and the Venezuelan government under Delcy Rodríguez. While described by some as a “tool for the United States,” his involvement in the massive oil deal has solidified his position as a prominent magnate in the region despite ongoing controversy regarding his business ties and past legal scrutiny.
