Alejandro Hamlyn arrested in Abu Dhabi by Interpol

Interpol has arrested Spanish businessman Alejandro Hamlyn in Abu Dhabi following an order from Spain's Audiencia Nacional. Hamlyn, the owner of the petroleum company Hafesa, had been a fugitive since 2025.

He is under investigation for allegedly bribing a police officer to obtain restricted information from police databases. Additionally, authorities suspect he may have paid an officer to destroy evidence related to a major tax fraud case. His company, Hafesa, was previously fined 152.4 million euros for tax crimes committed between 2016 and 2019.

Hamlyn's name has also been linked to the ‘Leire Díez case’ following a recorded videoconference in February 2025. In that meeting, former socialist activist Leire Díez allegedly sought information to discredit officials from the Civil Guard's Central Operative Unit (UCO). Extradition proceedings to bring Hamlyn back to Spain are expected to take several months.
