Alejandro Marmo responds to proposal to replace Eva Perón sculpture with Lionel Messi

Sculptor Alejandro Marmo has responded to a legislative proposal by Roberto García Moritán regarding the iconic Eva Perón sculpture located on 9 de Julio Avenue in Buenos Aires. Using artificial intelligence, Marmo created a digital image of Moritán placed on the historic building as a satirical retort to the politician's recent initiative.

García Moritán, a former official and member of Republicanos Unidos, has introduced a bill to allow the Executive Power to relocate or modify the images of Eva Perón at the National Historic Monument located at 9 de Julio 1925. His proposal seeks to make room for a monumental representation of footballer Lionel Messi on one of the building's facades, arguing that Messi transcends partisan differences and represents Argentina globally.

This proposal marks a shift from Moritán's 2022 stance, when he advocated for the demolition of the building to improve traffic flow. The current debate centers on the tension between preserving the Peronist legacy and honoring a contemporary national icon.
