Alejandro Moreno files complaint against INE counselors with U.S. State Department

Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, national president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), has filed a formal complaint with the United States Department of State against three counselors of Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE).

Moreno identified the counselors as Arturo Castillo Loza, Rita Bell López Vences, and Frida Denisse Gómez Puga. He alleges that their decisions have infringed upon freedom of expression and violated fundamental democratic principles in Mexico. The complaint follows an incident where Moreno was reportedly required to remove social media posts in which he characterized the current administration as a ‘narco-party’ and ‘narco-government.’

Moreno argued that the electoral body is not acting impartially but is instead submitting to the interests of the Federal Government, thereby attempting to silence political opposition. He stated that the move to an international instance is intended to highlight the perceived deterioration of democracy in the country.
