Alejandro Rocha Laureano released after torture conviction

Alejandro Rocha Laureano, a former commander of the Puebla Ministerial Police, has been released from prison in Cancún, Quintana Roo. He was convicted of torture related to the 2005 arbitrary detention and abuse of journalist Lydia Cacho Ribeiro.

A judge ordered his immediate release after determining that Rocha Laureano had served more than his sentence. While he was sentenced to five years and six months of imprisonment, he had been held in custody since his arrest in December 2018, totaling nearly eight years.

Other figures involved in the case remain under judicial process. Former Governor of Puebla, Mario Marín Torres, remains incarcerated at the El Altiplano federal prison despite requests for house arrest due to health and age. Additionally, Hugo Adolfo Karam Beltrán, former director of the Puebla Judicial Police, is currently facing charges but was granted an injunction allowing him to remain free during his legal proceedings.
